福尔摩斯之所以出名,在此书问世100年后,英国皇室决定授予小说同名主人公大侦探福尔摩斯以爵士爵位.英皇授爵的条件是苛刻而严肃的,而次却破天荒授给一个书上的虚构人物.可见,阿瑟 柯南道尔100年前的著作对外国人有多么深远的影响和重要的意义。
百余年来，全世界的推理小说迷不知有多少。虽然没有经过正式统计，但是说到《福尔摩斯探案集》启蒙的读者占了绝大多数，应该不会有人怀疑。
